POTSDAM – A book based on a catalog of house plans from the 1930s contains a photo of a house in Potsdam as an example of one of the plans.
The book, “Ideal Homes of the Thirties,” is a reissue of “Ideal Homes: Two-Story Houses,” a catalog published by Plan Service Company of St. Paul, Minn. in about 1933. It contains illustrations, floor plans and descriptions for about 60 house designs, the plans for which could be ordered from Plan Service.
This republication, by Dover Press, is intended as a historical document, with an introduction by SUNY Fredonia Prof. Emeritus Daniel D. Reiff, of the college’s Department of Visual Art and New Media.
Reiff’s introduction contains a photo of the house at 67-1/2 Pierrepont Ave. in the village, of a house he believes was based on an Ideal Homes plan, “Design No. 418.”
Reiff is the author of several other books, including “Houses from Books,” published by Penn State University Press in 2000, which includes illustrations of two other Potsdam houses that Reiff says were cased on or inspired by “pattern book” designs.
