Potsdam High School names 2013 valedictorian, salutatorian

POTSDAM -- Kate Hildreth has been named valedictorian for the Potsdam High School Class of 2013.

She is the daughter of Joe Hildreth and Caroline Downing. She earned a G.P.A. of 97.99. She has been a student at Potsdam Central School since kindergarten.

Kate has maintained a rigorous course load, including advanced classes. This year, Kate took an economics class at Clarkson and earned a 4.0. She is involved in extra-curricular activities, as president of National Honor Society and vice president of Environmental Club; with Potsdam’s Student Council and Key Club. She is a member of Potsdam’s Science Olympiad team, competing at the state contest three years in a row.

Kate has also played team sports, participating in varsity soccer, basketball, and track. This year, she served as captain for the varsity basketball and track teams. Kate also enjoys music, playing saxophone for Potsdam’s Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band, and takes private piano lessons. In the summer, Kate works as a lifeguard for the Potsdam Recreation Department.

She has been accepted to SUNY Potsdam, SUNY Binghamton, and Dartmouth College. She plans to attend Dartmouth College in the fall.

Salutatorian for the Class of 2013 is Rhea LaFleur.

Rhea is the daughter of Ronald LaFleur and Laura Goshko.

She earned a G.P.A. of 97.89 through accelerated study and is graduating after 3 years of high school.

Music has always been a part of Rhea’s life, and has performed with Potsdam High School’s music programs including Canta Sera, NYSSMA choir and solos, Area All State, All County Jazz and Choir, as well as the Drama Club. She has written and recorded a collection of songs and composed background music. She has sung at many local events, performing at the Potsdam Summer Festival and singing the Canadian and U.S. national anthems at Clarkson hockey games.

Rhea played varsity soccer. She has also been active in many student clubs and organizations such as the National Honor Society, National French Honor Society, Latin Club and Model United Nations.

She has been accepted to the University of Southern California, Boston University, Emerson College, New York University and has been named a Muse Honors Scholar at Hunter College in New York City. Rhea plans to attend the University of Southern California.

Potsdam High School graduation is in SUNY Potsdam’s Hosmer Hall at 7 p.m. Friday, June 21.
