Potsdam Hampton Inn developer makes preliminary applications at public hearing Thursday

POTSDAM – The Potsdam Planning Board hosts a public hearing at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7 on a preliminary Market Street subdivision application from hotel developer Andy Patel of Visions Hotels in Corning.

That and a site plan application from Patel for his proposed Hampton Inn project at 167-169 Market St. are on the agenda for the board’s meeting after the hearing, but Chairman Ted Prahl says both items are preliminary in nature and must be reviewed by the St. Lawrence County Planning Board before the local board takes any action.

In November, Patel announced his plan to build a 95-room, $6 to $7 million Hampton Inn where Scoopuccino and Ton’s Sports Bar now sit.

Less than two weeks later, SUNY Potsdam reaffirmed its plan to build a hotel and conference center at its riverfront Lehman Park, across Pierrepont Avenue from the campus.

Village officials would welcome either new hotel in town, as one has been part of the village’s official wish list for years.

The extra room capacity would make things easier for attendees at hockey tournaments, busy college graduation weekends, and alumni weekends, when local lodging can fill up fast.
