POTSDAM -- Someone with tuberculosis in St. Lawrence County has had contact with members of the Potsdam Elks Club who now have to be tested for the disease.
Tim Welpe of the Potsdam Elks Club has confirmed that the club was advised by the St. Lawrence County Department of Public Health that a person who has had contact with many members of the club has the disease, which mainly attacks the lungs.
Welpe said the department is contacting members, staff and others by telephone to set up tests for those believed to have been exposed.
“We’re doing our best to cooperate with them on how to approach members and take proactive steps,” Welpe said.
Welpe said he is concerned about the confidentiality of members being preserved, and that they are getting the information they need.
The St. Lawrence County Public Health Department has not yet responded to telephone calls for confirmation and comment.
