POTSDAM -- The Civic Center in Potsdam might find a place on the National Register of Historic Places.
Village Historian and Museum Curator Mimi VanDeusen is urging the village to approve the application process.
The Civic Center, which now comprises the villages office, library and museum, was built in 1934-35.
VanDeusen is proposing to make an application to the National Register of Historic Places for the Civic Center, because “Having a building on the register gives the owners, in this case the village, opportunity to apply for grants to preserve the building and address the problems that exist and prevent it from deteriorating,” she said.
“Old stone buildings need to be maintained, the mortar is of particular importance as it helps the building breath, controlling moisture retention. In our climate when moisture is trapped and freezes, as we all know, it causes problems.”
The old Town Hall that once stood in the same location was condemned and torn down when the Civic Center was built and the sandstone was repurposed for the new construction, VanDeusen explained.
