Potsdam Central School's payroll accounting gets thumbs-up in comptroller's audit

POTSDAM – Potsdam Central School’s payroll accounting has been commended as effective and accurate in an audit report released today by the state Comptroller’s Office.

“Establishing and adhering to a good system for processing and verifying payroll payments ensures the employees are accurately paid their salaries and wages,” the report from the audit team said.

“We commend District officials for designing an effective system that ensures the accuracy of compensation paid to employees,” the report said.

The Potsdam Central School District, comprising all or parts of the towns of Potsdam, Stockholm, Parishville, Pierrepont, and Canton, operates three schools with approximately 1,200 students.

Budgeted appropriations for the 2015-16 fiscal year totaled $30 million. The audit team reviewed a sampling of records from the period covered by the audit, July 1, 2014 through February 29, 2016.

“We reviewed all gross pay computations totaling approximately $2.4 million for 35 employees during our audit period to determine whether salaries and wages were accurately paid,” the audit said.

“Except for minor discrepancies which we discussed with District officials, we found the employees’ salaries and wages were accurately paid.”

The auditors said their “key finding” was that “District officials established adequate procedures to ensure employees were paid their approved salaries or wages.”
