POTSDAM – Potsdam Central School is now seeking to fill principal positions at both the elementary and high school levels after one principal stepped down Monday and no candidate was chosen to fill another.
Potsdam Central School Superintendent Joann Chambers says she will meet with the Board of Education Tuesday, Oct. 27, to discuss the next step in filling the recently vacated elementary school principal position.
Chambers said she wanted to speak with the board next week to consider all options available and that several administrative staff would chip in to provide Lawrence Avenue Elementary School with the assistance they need.
Shannon Pitcher-Boyea stepped down from the elementary school principal position she accepted earlier this spring citing family reasons, according to an email sent out to all elementary school parents Monday.
Chambers, along with A.A. Kingston Middle School Principal Mark Bennett and Dean of Students and Athletic Director Mark Wilson will all fill in while an interim principal is considered.
“I’ve done the legwork and some names have been given to me and I’ve reached out to others about the position,” she said.
She said previous candidates for the job have not been contacted.
Chambers said there is the possibility the school will continue the year with an interim principal and that the process of looking for a permanent replacement would not begin until next week.
She said it is always better to look to fill administrative positions in the spring and summer as it does not disrupt students and there are generally stronger candidates available.
The school will also look to fill the high school principal position this spring.
The original plan was to hire a candidate this month but the decision-making committee did not agree on anyone to put forward to the board, Chambers said.
Chambers said if they begin the search process this spring, she is hopeful Potsdam Central will be one of the first ones administrators look at when applying for jobs.
Randy Johnson, former K-12 principal at Colton-Pierrepont Central School, will be the interim high school principal until a permanent replacement is found.
“We want to take our time and make a good decision,” Chambers said.
