POTSDAM — The cause of death of an 11-year old Potsdam boy is under investigation after he passed away Saturday afternoon after suffering flu-like symptoms.
Rayden L. LaBarge died on Mill Street Nov. 11 in Parishville, according to St. Lawrence County Coroner June Wood.
“I responded along with Parishville Rescue and the mom was doing CPR when we arrived,” Wood said.
Wood said she was not sure the cause or manner of death.
She assisted Dr. Samuel Livingston with the autopsy on Sunday where swabs and cultures were taken. Blood samples were sent to labs with test results expected in 6 to 8 weeks.
Wood did not know where LaBarge had been treated for his recent illness, but said it was a few days prior to his death.
Rayden was the son of Brian LaBarge and Virginia “Ginny” Moses.
Potsdam Central School Superintendent Joann Chambers addressed the death in an email sent out to parents of children in the school district.
The email stated: “It is with deep regret that we inform you about a recent loss to our school community. On Saturday, our 6th-grade student, Rayden LaBarge, died at home. Rayden was recently ill, and the family is awaiting more information about his cause of death.
“Our school has a Crisis Intervention Team made up of professionals trained to help with the needs of students, parents, and school personnel at difficult times such as this. In all three school buildings, we have counselors available for any student who may need or want help or any type of assistance surrounding this loss.
“If you would like additional information or need assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.
“We are saddened by the loss to our school community and will make every effort to help you and your child as need.”
Visitation will be Friday from 4-7 pm at the Hammill Funeral Home. In keeping with his families wishes Rayden’s Funeral Services will be held privately at their convenience.
