POTSDAM -- State Senators Joseph Griffo and Patty Ritchie and Assembly representatives Addie Russell and Ken Blankenbush are expected to attend Friday's groundbreaking for SUNY Potsdam's new $41 million performing arts building.

The ceremony will kick off with a special performance by Cari Danco, a student Caribfunk dance troupe; the backdrop will include silhouettes designed by students from the Department of Theatre and Dance representing their hopes for the facility.

This is the first new academic building to be built at SUNY Potsdam since 1973.

The new building will have 97,000 square feet of theater and dance space, supporting the college's Department of Theatre and Dance.

More than 100 guests and many students are set to attend. The groundbreaking is set for 3:15 p.m.

SUNY Potsdam estimates that the new building will provide an estimated $128 million in economic activity and create 344 jobs in the North Country during construction.
