Police union officials praise SUNY Canton police officer for 'presumably live-saving' overdose intervention

CANTON -- The union representing SUNY Canton University Police officers are praising one of the department's members for administering "a presumably live-saving dose of naxolone, or Narcan, to an overdose patient."

In the early morning hours on Nov. 30, officer Seth A. Filitraut and others from several other agencies responded to a report of a suicide at an off-campus address, according to the Police Benevolent Association of New York State Law Enforcement.

Police arriving at the scene had to gain entry to the house through an unlocked window. No one answered knocks to the front door, and all doors to the home were locked, the union said.

Going room to room in search of the patient, they found her in the basement unconscious on a couch, her breathing shallow.

Filiatrault then got Narcan from his vehicle, administered his dose and the victim slowly regained consciousness. Medical crews transported her to the hospital, PBA said.

A statement from the union did not give the specific address where this happened, the victim's name or age, nor did it say if the person was a SUNY Canton student.

“Officer Filiatrault and his law enforcement colleagues are to be commended for their professionalism and rapid response, and for reversing a potentially tragic situation,” said union President Peter Barry, their university police officers director. “We hope the best for the young woman as she recovers from this incident.”

Assisting on the call were St. Lawrence County Sheriff deputies Devin Thomas, Colin Nicol and Ben Rockwood, Canton Police Officer Christopher Flint and Canton Fire Rescue personnel who were not named.
