Police shift hunt for escapees to Franklin County seasonal camps

Posted

After more than two weeks of an intense search stretching from northern New York to the Pennsylvania border, New York State Police on Tuesday said they were focusing their search on seasonal camps in Franklin County for escaped prisoners Richard Matt and David Sweat.

The state police reported in a press release Tuesday no apparent results since their discovery of evidence last weekend that one or both men, who escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora on June 6, had spent time within the previous 48 hours in a seasonal camp near Owls Head.

In earlier statements, police confirmed that DNA evidence led them to that conclusion, but did not go into further detail, such as whether the evidence they found implicated both or only one of the escapees.

On Monday night, a resident on Fayette Road on Titus Mountain reported a possible sighting of the two escapees. Law enforcement spent several hours searching the area and did not find any signs of the suspects, state police said.

Authorities are using aviation and canine units in an effort to track the suspects. More than 1,000 law enforcement officers from state, local and federal agencies are involved in this search, including Conservation Officers and Forest Rangers from the Department of Environmental Conservation, officers from the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, the FBI, U.S. Marshals Service, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Vermont State Police, Plattsburgh Police, and the Clinton and Franklin County Sheriff’s Department.

The current search area involves a large portion of Franklin County, including the town of Bellmont, which is mostly rural with very rugged, mountainous terrain. As this search continues, state police said they are moving the current command post in Franklin County from the Owl's Head Fire Department to the Titus Mountain Ski Center.

On Tuesday, law enforcement officers were going door-to-door looking for any signs of break-ins or any other unusual activity. Law enforcement is also again asking the owners of seasonal camps in the region to make sure their camps are secure, and if they notice anything unusual or out of place to call 911.

Matt and Sweat, two convicted murderers serving time at the state prison in Dannemora, escaped in an elaborate plan cutting through metal walls and using metal pipes and other conduits to emerge near the prison but outside its walls, coming out of a manhole in the street.

In the two weeks since the men escaped, the search has taken hundreds of law enforcement personnel on high-intensity grid searches of forest and fields near the prison to the Pennsylvania border where one sighting was reported, only to return to the area around the prison after the weekend’s sighting at the camp near Owl’s Head.

Since the first reports of the escape, a woman who was a civilian tailoring shop employee at the prison, has been charged with aiding the two men’s escape, and a corrections officer has been placed on administrative leave over the incident, though his involvement, if any, has not been revealed by authorities.

State police are reiterating their message that public should not hesitate to report any suspicious activity including any signs of a trespass, burglary or vehicle theft, by calling 911, a local law enforcement agency, or the New York State Police at (518) 563-3761 or 1-800-GIVETIP. Tips can also be sent by email to crimetip@troopers.ny.gov.

The New York State Police are reminding residents of the region to remain vigilant and take necessary safety precautions. The escapees are extremely dangerous. If anyone believes that they have spotted either suspect, they should call 911 immediately. Do not approach or attempt to engage the escapees, state police said.
