OGDENSBURG – An Ogdensburg resident has been arrested and jailed without bail for allegedly pushing a man into the St. Lawrence River watching him drown, then walking away.

Ogdensburg Police charged Kerry L. Ulrey, 47, of no fixed address, Ogdensburg, was charged with criminally negligent homicide Wednesday afternoon. He was then arraigned in Ogdensburg City Court and sent to St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility, according to Det./Sgt. Robert Wescott of the Ogdensburg Police Department Criminal Investigations Unit.

The arrest followed the recovery of the body of Brian M. Sharpe, 57, of Ogdensburg, from the St. Lawrence River near Morrisette Park.

Police said they believe Sharpe was involved in a physical altercation with Ulrey and during the fight he was intentionally pushed into the river. The victim began struggling, went under and never resurfaced, police said.

Police had initially received a missing person report at 5:28 p.m. Tuesday that Sharpe was last seen at approximately1 a.m. and may have gone into the water off the Morissette Park area..

Local divers from Ogdensburg Police, Fire and Rescue responded to the area adjacent to the seawall in Morissette Park and checked the area until darkness. Police detectives and patrols extensively checked all locations that Sharpe was known to frequent, police said.

Developments during the course of the investigation led credibility to the fact the victim was likely in the St. Lawrence River, police said.

Wednesday morning, divers returned to Morissette Park and after a renewed search of the water, Sharpe’s body was recovered, police said.

The body was removed to the Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center and an autopsy is scheduled for Friday at the Albany Medical Center, police said.

During the search and investigation, the Ogdensburg Police Department was assisted by the St. Lawrence County Dive Team, Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad, Ogdensburg Fire Department, Lisbon Fire Department, Heuvelton Fire Department, the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department and the U.S. Border Patrol.
