Stanley P. Tarbox, of 432 Butternut Ridge Rd., was discovered deceased at 7:14 p.m. following a search by deputies, a K-9 unit and other agencies.

They responded after receiving a 911 report at 5:11 p.m. that Tarbox had failed to return after going into the woods to cut firewood and hunt.

Deputies said Tarbox had attempted to fell a tree that had become lodged in another. While cutting another tree to free it, the first tree fell on him and pinned him to the ground, deputies said.

Coroner June Wood responded to the scene and pronounced Tarbox dead.

Deputies were assisted by the U.S. Boarder Patrol, state police, forest rangers and conservation police as well as the Colton fire and rescue departments.
