CANTON -- Easter eggs of various colors will be scattered all around the Canton Pavilion, 90 Lincoln St., March 31 for the Peter Rabbit in the Park festival sponsored by the Canton Chamber of Commerce, SUNY Canton and St. Lawrence University.
The annual event featuring the ubiquitous Easter Egg Hunt for children 6 and under will also include games, face painting, bowling, coloring, a cake walk and other Easter-themed activities.
Canton Chamber Executive Director Allison Bauer said volunteers from St. Lawrence University’s sororities and fraternities and students from SUNY Canton have been busy stuffing over 3,000 multi-colored Easter eggs with candy and other treats.
The festival, a collaborative effort between the students of the two colleges and the chamber, has been a regular Easter event for more than 20 years.
Around 300 youngsters are expected at the event.
“I am very excited for this event because it is so community oriented. I am looking forward to work with both colleges and see the large turnout of families and kids,” said Bauer. The director was hired late last year, and this will be her first Peter Rabbit in the Park event.
“Winterfest was filled with many smaller events so it’ll be interesting to see everyone attend one event, on one day, at one location. Canton is one of the few towns in the North Country to do an Easter Egg Hunt so I am honored to be a part of it,” Bauer said.
Various activities like cookie frosting and beading will be set up from noon-1 p.m. In addition to the cake walk, college student volunteers will have other events set up as well.
The egg hunt begins at 1 p.m. and again this year 15 special prize eggs will be available for children 4 and younger and 15 for youth 5-6 years old.
The chamber will also have its kayak raffle set up, said Bauer.
Bauer said this year’s event will be staged at the Pavilion regardless of weather conditions. Muddy conditions in years past have led to postponement. “Even if all the snow melts, I’m assuming the ground will not dry up enough in time,” Bauer said.
Volunteers are also appreciated. Those wanting to donate their time to assist at the event can contact the chamber at 315-386-8255, or email cantonchamberny@gmail.com.
