MASSENA -- Patient volumes are on the rise, Massena Memorial Hospital’s chief financial officer told the Board of Manager on Monday.

“Volumes are up all over the place. Inpatients are up … newborns are up too,” CFO Pat Facteau told the MMH board on Monday. “We’re up all over on outpatient stuff total … volumes are up on clinics.”

A February financial and statistical summary made public at the meeting shows a 14.86 percent increase in inpatient discharges from February 2016 )157) to last month (180). The inpatient increase from this point year-to-date in 2016 to the same point in 2017 is 23 percent, 331 to 408, the summary says.

Outpatient registrations are up 5.4 percent, from 8,741 in February 2016 to 9,221 last month.

A prepared statement MMH officials released at the end of Monday’s meeting says newborn births are up 40 percent from last year.

MMH finished February 2017 in the black, to the tune of $88,127. That’s 10.1 percent ahead of February 2016, but 12.7 percent behind budget. Year-to-date, they have gained a total of $236,766, which is 40.3 percent of the same time last year and 17.1 percent ahead of budget.

Meanwhile, Facteau said MMH made their final Medicaid “clawback” payment this month.

In November, MMH announced they were among numerous New York hospitals from whom a Medicare contractor demanded what the contractor claimed were overpayments from past years. MMH had to come up with $1.6 million, which they paid in monthly installments.

“We’ve been fighting with them. They actually started sending checks back and deducted payments from us. Now it’s all cleared” “They decided to change their rules in the middle of everything … but it’s all paid now. It’s all done,” Facteau said Monday.
