A highly partisan Democratic congressional campaign organization is trying to tie Watertown Republican candidate Matt Doheny to a New York City Republican congressman arrested Monday on criminal charges.
“Candidate Matt Doheny is sitting on $2,000 in campaign cash from Congressman Michael Grimm who was arrested by the FBI this morning for federal criminal charges,” said a press release from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which frequently attempts to link Republicans and scandal.
Rep. Grimm turned himself in to the FBI Monday morning, facing multiple charges stemming from his ownership of Manhattan health-food establishment and ties to an Israeli fundraiser who made a plea agreement with prosecutors last year, and a celebrity rabbi whose followers donated more than $50,000 to Grimm’s 2012 election campaign, according to Monday’s Washington Post. Grimm reportedly launched the restaurant in 2006 after he himself left the employ of the FBI.
The DCCC press release says that according to the database at CQMoneyline, Grimm contributed $2,000 to Doheny’s congressional campaign in 2012, in a losing effort to incumbent Bill Owens of Plattsburgh, who is not running again this year.
“Doheny must immediately return the $2,000 in scandal-tainted cash and call on his Republican colleagues and leaders to denounce Grimm immediately,” said Josh Schwerin of the DCCC.
“For Doheny to continue to stand by Michael Grimm while spending his scandal-tainted cash on his own election efforts is an endorsement of the most corrupt member of Congress in the country,” the DCCC said in its release.
