Parishville man wants to keep seat on state siting board even after wind developers pull out of town

PARISHVILLE — Parishville resident Gary Snell, who has a seat on the state siting board overseeing the wind project, wants to keep his seat on the board even though Parishville will no longer be a host community.

The firm hoping to build a wind turbine farm in St. Lawrence County pulled out of Parishville and will now only plan to build in Hopkinton. For more, see story.

“I intend to call the siting board,” Snell said.

Snell was nominated by the Town of Parishville and St. Lawrence County. He said he feels he should still be on the board because of the recommendation from St. Lawrence County.

“I see no reason not to be on the board.”

He was appointed to the New York Siting Board on Electronic Siting and the Environment Aug. 2, but the wind company, Avangrid, claims he should have been determined ineligible due to a conflict of interest.

Snell was previously the chairman of the Concerned Citizens for Rural Preservation (CCRP), a group opposed to the wind farm.

The siting board oversees the permitting process for power plants of 25 megawatts (MW) or greater. The board has five state-appointed members and two local members. Ernest Parker was chosen to represent Hopkinton.
