PARISHVILLE -- The Parishville-Hopkinton Central Board of Education took one more step toward a $2.3 million dollar capital project and received a large donation toward their proposed new playground.

A resolution to approve the final scope of work for the 2015 Building Conditions Survey was approved by the Board of Education at their Monday meeting.

As a result of the survey, PHCS is looking to address several needs at the school through a tentative $2.3 million capital project.

PHCS Superintendent Wayne Walbridge said the capital project would provide improvements to its sports fields, gymnasium, locker rooms, auditorium and also provide energy upgrades.

The school participated in a building condition survey in 2015 and identified several areas that are “in dire need to be addressed,” he said.

Walbridge said state aid would likely fund about 80 percent of the project and that the school has about $500,000 in the capital reserve to “offset any tax impact.”

A major chunk of funding would go toward replacing locker rooms for male and female students. Improvement to locker rooms have not been made since 1968.

Improvements to the auditorium would include electrical, sound, lighting and equipment upgrades. Another huge chunk of the funding would address the school’s athletic fields.

There are drainage issues with the soccer fields that create pools of water in front of the soccer goals during heavy rain.

Other work proposed would be asbestos removal, carpet replacement, phone system replacement, a playground upgrade and replacing flooring the two gyms.

Walbridge said a capital project vote is expected in November.

Also, the PHCS Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) donated $25,500 from the Playground Fund to the capital fund, which would go toward a building a new playground.

Walbridge said the money was raised over the last several years through fundraisers. Elementary principal Brooke Reed made the presentation, along with several students, to the board.

He said the additional funds should help in seeking state funding. He estimated the cost of a new playground between $70,000 and $100,000.

“It was a nice gesture and we are appreciative of the PTO,” he said.
