POTSDAM – Parishville-Hopkinton Central senior Amanda Mason was awarded a certificate of achievement and a $250 cash prize for placing third in the 2016 AMVETS Americanism Essay Contest at the national level.
The theme was “What does Flag protection mean to me?”
Criteria for judging the essays are originality, adherence to theme, and literary composition. The Americanism program is a patriotic program the AMVET organization offers schools and youth organizations as a resource for teaching children about their American heritage, civics and citizenship.
The winners at the local level progress to the state contests and the state winners are then entered into the National competition.
Amanda, a Junior at the time the contest began, placed first place at the local level for POST 265 Parishville, then went on to win first place in the AMVETS Department of New York contest.
