PARISHVILLE — The Parishville-Hopkinton Central School Board of Education is discussing hiring a full-time secondary science teacher to better meet student needs.

The board also appointed a new kindergarten teacher.

The BOE began discussions Monday night of hiring a full time science teacher with an emphasis on chemistry.

Walbridge said they had previously considered hiring a part-time science teacher, but a lack of applications prompted the district to reconsider.

“Not a lot of qualified people are going to apply — most people are looking for full time,” he said.

A series of tweaks to the budget has allocated enough funds to be able to pay for a full time science position.

Walbridge was hopeful the added position would lead to advanced course, opportunities and placement for students in science fields.

“With Clarkson University nearby it makes sense,” he said. “Many of our students do well in science and this will help to better meet their needs.

Walbridge said PHCS has not been able to address the science teacher issue because of budgetary reasons.

Tara TenEyck will teach kindergarten students beginning this fall, according to PHCS Interim Superintendent Wayne Walbridge.

Walbridge said the school will offer two kindergarten classes next school year, after offering just one last year due to a decline in enrollment.

TenEych officially replaces Jeanne Corcoran. She was with the district over 30 years taught several grade levels over the years.

Walbrdige said there was some shuffling of teaching positions, which created an opening at the kindergarten level.

The BOE next meets July 10 at 7 p.m.
