CANTON – A new flagpole will be erected at United Helpers Maplewood Campus thanks to the efforts of two World War II veterans who are residents at the facility.
Leslie B. Peters and Gerald Pike said they couldn’t believe there was no American flag flying outside the building.
“I think it’s important for a place that has 28 veterans living in it to have a flag,” said Peters. So he and Pike took matters into their own hands by starting a fundraising effort to get the money to purchase one.
They have solicited various service organizations, including local AmVets, VFWs, Disabled American Veterans, and Marine Corps. With a recent donation last week from American Legion Post #74 of Potsdam, their $1,500 goal is in sight.
“I’d like to see the flag pole erected this fall, but it probably won’t be until spring,” said Peters. “At least it will be up in time for next year’s Memorial Day observance.”
Pike has an American flag that was owned by his deceased brother, Harvey, and plans to donate it to fly on the new pole.
While presenting the check at Maplewood, members of Post #74 also honored Peters with a commemorative certificate for his 50 year membership in the organization.
