Overall shipping on St. Lawrence Seaway down about 7 percent compared to one year ago

Overall shipping on the St. Lawrence Seaway is down about 7 percent so far this year from year-to-date figures from May 2014.

But grain shipments, which were the highest last year in more than 10 years, are up 7 percent year-to-date through May, according to monthly figures from the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation.

Total cargo through the system from season start through May last year was 6,890,000 metric tons, compared with this year through May, at 6,402,000 metric tons.

Grain shipments have jumped from 1,784,000 tons though May last year to 1,911,000 tons this year.

Iron are shipments have shrunk from 1,416,000 tons last year to 984,000 tons this year, a drop of more than 30 percent.

Vessel transits through the system this year are slightly behind last year, at 720 last year to 711 this year, a reduction of 1.25 percent.

In other categories, coal shipments are down 27.5 percent, dry bulk is up 4 percent, liquid bulk is down almost 10 percent, and general cargo is up 5.11 percent this year.
