MASSENA -- Over 150 shooters hit local waterways for the 35th St. Lawrence Bowfishing Championship on June 21.

Jared House of Utica took home a $1,000 top prize with a 38.4-pound carp.

“[This year] showed an impressive jump in women and youth shooters, and the furthest shooter traveled all the way from California,” club spokesperson Julie Wilson wrote. “A few of our Fort Drum soldiers also got in on the action, which really made this year special.”

Each year, the championship donates the tournament proceeds to groups that encourage youth in the outdoors, with a focus on archery programs.

In the past, 4H, Camp TaKumTa (a Vermont-based camp for children suffering from cancer) and both the Long Sault and Norfolk Junior Archers have benefited.
