The Orchestra of Northern New York and the St. Lawrence Power and Equipment Museum are among recipients in St. Lawrence County of more than $49,000 in the latest round of giving by the Watertown-based Northern New York Community Foundation.

At their quarterly meeting Tuesday, the foundation approved over $108,000 in grants to support organizations and programs in Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties.

Grants approved were:

• Orchestra of Northern New York, Potsdam - $17,000 to fund a minimum of four concerts in Watertown as part of their 2013-14 season. This grant also includes help for the orchestra in their outreach efforts to establish a presence in Jefferson County.

• St. Lawrence Power and Equipment Museum, Madrid - $12,500 matching grant to assist in their campaign to establish an endowment fund at the Community Foundation.

• New Beginnings Clothing & Food Outreach, Inc., Madrid - $10,000 to help complete the construction of a new thrift store and food pantry.

• Community Performance Series, Potsdam - $5,000 towards their summer musical series.

• St. Lawrence County NYSARC, Canton - $4,800 in startup funds for a pilot program, “Freedom Reins,” an equine therapy program for those with developmental disabilities.

• SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, Wanakena - $15,000 matching grant to complete fundraising for the Thousand Islands Biological Research Station, located on Governor’s Island near Clayton. This made possible, in part, through the Grace L. Reinman Fund for Clayton and the Alex Velto Community Fund.

The Northern New York Community Foundation makes grants to support the work of non-profit organizations and provides scholarships to individuals in Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence Counties. This work is made possible by donors who have established permanent, charitable funds with the Foundation during their lifetimes or through their wills.

“We were very fortunate this quarter to have the ability, through our donors, past and present, to support a wide range of projects all across the North Country. This helps demonstrate the ability of a Community Foundation to support the whole spectrum of quality of life,” said Rande S. Richardson, Community Foundation Executive Director.
