POTSDAM -- The United Methodist Church, 26 Main St., is this year part of a network of relay and collection centers for Operation Christmas Child, for which shoebox gifts are sought.
Volunteers fill the shoeboxes with gifts such as school supplies, small toys, puzzles, games, stuffed animals, stickers, blankets, hygiene items, coloring books, sunglasses, crayons, pens and pencils. The shoeboxes are collected, shipped to processing centers in the US, and made ready for their trip overseas.
“Potsdam United Methodist Church has an ample supply of shoeboxes and all the instructions for filling them,” according to church secretary Betsy Baker, “and we invite scout troops, social groups, fraternities and sororities and individuals to join with our church and the West Stockholm United Methodist Church to participate.”
Call the church office at 265-7474 or stop by from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday to pick up a box and instructions. Email secretary@potsdamumc.org for more information. You may also use your own average size shoebox and find Instructions online at samaritanspurse.org. A $7 donation goes to Samaritan’s Purse for shipping and handling.
“Filled boxes must be returned to the church by Thursday, Nov. 19. We will dedicate the boxes during worship on Sunday, Nov. 22. Those who wish are welcome to attend the service and dedication,” Baker says.
Operation Christmas Child is a program of Samaritan’s Purse, an international relief organization headed by Franklin Graham. More than 8.4 million children in over 100 countries received shoeboxes in 2014.
