One man burned, another person displaced following grease fire in Massena

MASSENA – One man suffered burns Tuesday morning and another man was provided emergency aid from the American Red Cross following a grease fire at a Ridgewood Avenue residence.

Massena Volunteer Fire Chief Bill Kearns says the fire was reported at 10:58 a.m. and was out by the time firefighters arrived.

Kearns said firefighters were called back to the scene, 30 Ridgewood Ave., around 1:45 p.m. when smoldering of insulation was discovered inside a shared wall of the bathroom and kitchen.

The smoldering charred wires and the power had to be shut off to the building, he said. The damage was limited to the one wall.

Kearns said Richard Yerden, no age listed, lived there and that he was being provided emergency aid from the American Red Cross.

Yerden’s nephew, identified only as Jesus, was burned when he carried the grease outside, Kearns said. He suffered burns to his hands and feet and refused treatment on scene.

Kearns said Jesus later went to Canton-Potsdam Hospital at the urging of his mother and was sent to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse for medical treatment.

He said it would be a few days before the insurance company could assess damage and that Yerden would need to be provided a place to live during that time.

Massena firefighters were assisted on scene by Massena Rescue, Massena police and Massena Electric. Firefighters were back in service around 2:15 p.m.
