CANTON -- After restoration, an old Canton fire call box will hang in the home of Mike Morgan, former Canton fire chief and 30-year department member.
Morgan says that about 15 years ago, he and Ray Holz, son of a career forest service firefighter and longtime local volunteer, found themselves bidding against each other at a St. Mary's School auction when Morgan backed out and let Holz have the old call box for his father. Since then, it has hung in Holz’s parents’ house. His father died some years ago, and his mother moved into a nursing home a few months ago.
Holz cleaned out his mother's house recently and found the box, which he is he is giving to Morgan as thanks for his generosity at the auction those years ago.
“I may need some help from the older guys, I believe box number 61 is from Riverside Drive near Bell's gas station. What a wonderful Christmas surprise this was!” Morgan said.
Morgan’s daughter, Steff, said she is proud of her father, who is still “an active member of this community, and is really a sweet man. My hero, actually, and I would like everyone that good things happen to good people.
“Also, just a small coincidence,” Steff wrote, “the last time this old call box was inspected was on June 30, 1993, my Dad’s birthday.”
