OGDENSBURG -- Ogdensburg’s solar array is set to be fully energized by Jan. 31, according to a recent update from City Manager Sarah Purdy.

The project has faced numerous delays, but has now been partially energized.

Issues related to connecting the 1.8-megawatt farm to National Grid’s system have delayed the project, which was intended to be up and running last spring.

The installation is being performed by New Energy Equity and RER Energy Group and requires no contribution of funds from the city.

Once it’s operational, the solar farm is expected to save the city more than $45,000 per year over the next 25 years.

Under the agreement the city will purchase power at about 8 cents per kwh. That’s about 4 cents cheaper than the current rate paid to National Grid rate of 11.7 cents per kwh. That amount will increase by 2.5 percent per year, while the National Grid price is expected to increase by roughly 3 to 4 percent.

Meanwhile the city is also starting site preparation for a second phase of solar and is also working as part of a Tri-County Energy Consortium.

Ogdensburg is working to produce all of the municipal power through renewable sources and is on pace to do so with in the next few years.
