OGDENSBURG -- The Ogdensburg Police Department announced the retirement of Police Officer K9 Kodiak.

Kodiak was the department’s first police dog and contributed to 130 arrests and hundreds of seizures of drugs and illegal contraband.

Kodiak has conducted numerous tracks, locating a runaway child, numerous suspects and locating crucial pieces of evidence.

K9 Kodiak was beloved by the school children as he made appearances at Kennedy and Madill elementary schools and various community events.

Kodiak will truly leave big paws to fill. The department will continue the K9 program with the appointment of a new K9 handler and purchase of a new dog in the near future. The retirement stems from a change in position of Kodiak’s handler Sergeant Mark Kearns.

Kodiak will spend his retirement years with Sergeant Kearns and his family. Kodiak is black Labrador retriever and served from 2014. Kodiak was certified by the American Working Dog Association in the areas of drug detection and tracking/trailing.
