Ogdensburg Zonta Club seeking applicants for scholarships

The Ogdensburg Zonta Club is taking applications for four scholarships.

Last year, locals received $5,600

With the exception of the Adult Learner Award, applications are sought from students in the area serviced by Hammond, Morristown, Ogdensburg, Lisbon or Heuvelton schools.

Applications for the following awards are due April 28:

• Graduating High School Senior award is offered to area graduating high school students, male or female, who will pursue higher education. It is based on definite standards relative to scholarship, character, leadership, service to the community and school and the desire to succeed, Zonta officials said. The amount varies.

• Adult Learner award is offered to area adult female non-traditional learners who are at least 25 years old and who have completed at least one year of higher education. The applicant must be a permanent resident of St. Lawrence County and reside within a 20-mile radius of Ogdensburg. The award is $1,000.

Applications for these awards are due March 3:

• Zonta District Awards will give $300 to a local recipient, and their application will be forwarded to the club’s district level for further consideration.

• Young Women in Public Affairs award honors a young woman 16 to 19 years old who

“demonstrates a commitment to leadership in public policy, government and volunteer organizations,” Zonta officials said. The district recipient will receive a $1,000 award. Ten international recipients will receive $4,000 awards.

• Jean M. Coon award is given to a high school junior or senior, male or female, who has demonstrated “outstanding community service,” the clubn said. The district recipient will receive up to $2,000.
