OGDENSBURG -- Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center’s Rev. Thomas T. Patterson Wound Healing Center has received a three-year accreditation for its hyperbaric oxygen services from the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS).
The facility uses hyperbaric oxygen therapy chambers as part of the treatment of chronic non-healing wounds and late effects of radiation.
There are more than 800 hyperbaric facilities in the United States, but only about 155 are accredited, CHMC said. The Patterson Center is the only accredited center in Northern New York, and one of 25 in the state. creditation is a rigorous process, and UHMS accreditation means the patient service at the Wound Healing Center is recognized as a Center of Excellence for wound care and hyperbaric medicine, according to CHMC.
The UHMS survey team exam 25 different areas of hyperbaric facilities, including compliance with state and local codes for the facility, adequacy of chamber and equipment, staff training, patient safety, and quality of care, CHMC said.
