OGDENSBURG – Ogdensburg City Council will seek a $500,000 Restore NY grant to fund the demolition of condemned city-owned properties.

The grant would require a 10 percent match from the city, which Comptroller Tim Johnson says could come from community development funds. Deputy Mayor Michael Morley pointed out that would deplete those funds, but Johnson said it’s possible other funding could be used to offset the cost. He also said there is a fair chance Ogdensburg won’t receive the entire $500,000. If that happens the match could be less than the $50,000 estimate.

According to the resolution the funding would be used to demolish 1 29,820 square foot commercial property at 17 Main Street, a 62,176 square foot vacant residential property at 420 Lafayette Street, and a 73,920 square foot condemned commercial property at 212 Ford Street.

According to the resolution the use of the grant funding is consistent with the city’s “Designated Step II Brownfield Opportunity Area Nomination Plan” to revitalize the downtown waterfront core.

The consistency with the city’s plan will likely improve the city’s chances of success in seeking the funding.

The council approved the measure with all members present voting in favor. Councilor David Price was excused as he was recovering from a medical issue in Syracuse.
