Ogdensburg will celebrate 150th anniversary with wide range of community events

OGDENSBURG -- A year-long slate of events have been planned to mark the 150th anniversary of the City of Ogdensburg’s incorporation.

Kicking off the celebration will be an Arbor Day tree planting ceremony hosted by the Ogdensburg Tree Commission on Friday, April 27, the anniversary date of the city’s incorporation on April 27, 1868. The tree planting ceremony will take place at 9:30 a.m. in the Greenbelt in front of the Elsa Luksich Municipal Pool.

Ogdensburg Mayor Wayne Ashley will read a proclamation and tree commission members will speak about the importance of Arbor Day and give background on the species of tree planted.

This year, the commission will plant a Princeton Sentry Ginko. A small plaque provided by Frary Funeral Home will also be installed and a time capsule will be buried during the tree planting ceremony to dedicate the occasion.

A reception will follow at the Dobisky Visitors’ Center, 100 Riverside Ave. The public is invited to attend.

A complete list of 150th anniversary themed events are as follows:

• May 11 and 12 -- Chamber’s Wine, Beer and Food Festival at the Richard G. Lockwood Civic Center;

• May 12 -- Historical Trivia Night at Hosmer’s Marina;

• May 18 -- Living History Day, Lighthouse Point;

• June 9 -- Annual Car-B-Que in the Greenbelt: Classic car show, craft vendors, live music, bounce houses and facing painting sponsored by Chamber of Commerce;

• July 19 -- A Night at the Museum from 6-8 p.m. at the Frederic Remington Art Museum, to mark the 95th anniversary of the museum and the 150th anniversary of the city. Music in the courtyard, light refreshments, museum activities, cash bar will be offered;

• July 22 -- Fred’s Wild West BBQ and Library Fun Fest at the Ogdensburg Public Library;

• July 22-28 -- Ogdensburg International Seaway Festival: Activities include Battle of the High School Bands, craft show, classic car show, concerts and contest, fireworks on July 27 and the Seaway Festival Parade on July 28;

• Aug. 11 -- Party in the Park hosted by the Ogdensburg Parks & Recreation Department. Fireworks, food, bounce house, face painting, games and more in Library Park;

• Sept. 8 -- Walking History Tour and City Hall Open House; and

• Nov. 3 -- Finale Event -- A Rock-N-Skate at the Lockwood Arena from 6 to 9 p.m.
