OGDENSBURG -- A veteran Ogdensburg police officer accused of possessing child pornography remains on leave, according to Police Chief Richard Polniak.
Harry J. McCarthy, 54, was charged Aug. 15 with promoting an obscene sexual performance by a child and possession of an obscene sexual performance by a child, both felonies.
Rumors circulating on Facebook and elsewhere claimed McCarthy had returned to work, but the chief says they are false.
“This is a rumor. Lt. McCarthy remains on administrative leave. He has been to the station on a couple of recent occasions for the purpose of collecting some personal items. That is all,” he said.
McCarthy’s arrest was the result of an investigation conducted by the New York State Police Computer Crimes Unit and Troop B, in cooperation with the City of Ogdensburg Police Department.
Following his arrest, McCarthy was arraigned in Pierrepont Town Court, released under the supervision of probation and placed on paid administrative leave.
An order of protection was also issued for McCarthy's girlfriend and her children.
