OGDENSBURG -- Ogdensburg will seek an $11,000 grant to help restore its tree population after culling ash trees in preparation of the arrival of the emerald ash borer.
Ogdensburg has attained Tree City USA status for 25 consecutive years
On Monday, the council gave approval to the city manager submit an application not to exceed $11,000 for an Urban Forestry Tree Planting Grant.
The grant requires a 25 percent match, up to $2,750, which will consist of in-kind staff services, force and volunteer labor, and dedicated cash resources from budget line.
Ogdensburg Parks and Recreation Director Matthew Curatolo said the city will plant smaller trees in areas with power lines and taller trees in areas without them. He said the city is working to diversify the variety of trees in order to protect the population against invasive species and sicknesses.
