OGDENSBURG -- The Ogdensburg Pride and Beautification Committee recently donated $3,000 to the Ogdensburg City School District to establish an athletic camp scholarship in the names of Peter and Charlie Gogolak. The Board of Education formally approved the acceptance of the donation at Monday’s meeting, in accordance with district policy regarding donations.
Peter and Charlie Gogolak are widely credited with bringing “soccer-style” field goal kicking to American football after migrating to Ogdensburg from Hungary as children during the 1950s. After graduating from Ogdensburg Free Academy, the brothers forever revolutionized the role of kickers in football while enjoying widespread collegiate and professional success. Peter Gogolak remains the New York Giants all-time leading scorer with 646 points.
The Ogdensburg Pride and Beautification Committee also recently honored the Gogolak brothers with a plaque and dedication ceremony before an Ogdensburg Free Academy home football game in September, which Peter Gogolak attended.
