Ogdensburg police hoping to connect with community through ‘Coffee with a Cop’ program

OGDENSBURG -- The Ogdensburg Police Department is hoping to connect with the public through a new program called ‘Coffee with a Cop.

On Friday, Oct. 7 the Ogdensburg Police Department is holding their first event at McDonalds, 1134 Paterson Street.

Coffee with a cop is a national initiative focused on law enforcement officers interacting with the community.

According to Lt. Daniel Mousaw, it is a simple concept.

“Police and community members gather at a local eatery or coffee shop to discuss community issues, build relationships, and drink coffee. It allows for relaxed, informal, one-on- one interactions, in a neutral and friendly atmosphere,” he said in a release to the press. “The majority of the interactions that law enforcement officers have with the public happen during emergencies, times of crisis, or emotional situations.”

Mousaw said those situations are less than optimal in effectively building a relationship with members of the public.

“Some community members may feel that officers are unapproachable on the street,” he said. “Coffee with a Cop provides the opportunity to break down communication barriers. There are no agendas or speeches. Just a chance to ask questions, voice concerns, and get to know the officers in your community. Join your neighbors and police officers for coffee and conversation. “

The Coffee with a Cop event will be hosted by the Ogdensburg McDonald’s. It will run from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.

The department is hopeful that this event is successful enough, to hold other Coffee with a Cop events throughout the year.

Anyone with questions or who may interested in hosting a Coffee with a Cop event in the future is encouraged to contact Lieutenant Daniel Mousaw at the Ogdensburg Police Department.
