Ogdensburg now has GIS mapping of water, sewer, zoning; considers public access

OGDENSBURG – Ogdensburg’s water, sewer and storm drains are now mapped with geographic information systems.

A $90,000 grant acquired with help from the Development Authority of the North Country in 2013 paid for the mapping.

At a Monday meeting Star Carter, of DANC, gave a presentation to city council as well as those in attendance.

The maps are not public at this time and may remain that way depending on direction from city council.

Carter told the board DANC recommends making the maps public, but added that the decision lies solely with the board. She said some municipalities have opted to keep them out of public view.

Carter explained that the mapping can be used for a variety of service needs, especially for the Department of Public Works. She said finding fire hydrants and mains that are buried in snow is a very common use for most municipalities that have the technology.

The maps are also customizable and upgradable. Currently the city’s map includes water, sewer, storm and zoning maps, but Carter said the possibilities are endless. The maps are include a variety of views including Google’s Street View and Bing’s Bird’s-eye.

Councilor Jennifer Stevenson said she would like to hear a recommendation from city staff as to how much of the maps should be made public.

If made available to the public, users will be able to access the maps through DANC’s website.

City Manager John Pinkerton said he expected a recommendation could be made prior the city’s September meeting.
