The Seaway Valley Prevention Council conducted the bi-annual Prevention Needs Assessment, a survey of middle and high school youth across St. Lawrence County that assesses the areas of alcohol, gambling, and substance abuse.

The results of the survey, which was held last December, are used to determine what services and programs are needed in the county.

The results of the survey will be made available to the superintendents later this spring.

“The Seaway Valley Prevention Council is pleased to report that we received excellent participation from thirteen school districts,” Advancing Tobacco-Free Communities Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence Counties assistant coordinator Elizabeth Billings said.

“The success of the assessment is heavily dependent on the teachers and coordinators who volunteer to administer the survey during class time,” she said. “The council would like to thank all who participated and made this year’s Prevention Needs Assessment a success.”

The school with the top participation level in each size category (small school, medium school, and large school) was awarded an iPad Mini for their efforts.

The small school winner was Parishville-Hopkinton, the medium school winner was Norwood-Norfolk, and the large school winner was Ogdensburg Free Academy.

“All three schools worked very hard to ensure that student participation was maximized,” Billings said. “The Seaway Valley Prevention Council extends their gratitude to these winners and recognizes them for their hard work and dedication to achieving the best results.”
