Ogdensburg marine railway, shipyard featured in St. Lawrence County Historical Association ‘Quarterly’

CANTON -- The latest edition of the Quarterly, published by the St. Lawrence County Historical Association (SLCHA), contains articles on the Ogdensburg marine railway and shipyard and the last of the Clarkson family women in Potsdam.

Author Richard Palmer uses photographs and text to describe the Ogdensburg marine railway and shipyard, organized in 1852 and built on the shore of the St. Lawrence River.

Over the years, numerous ships were overhauled or constructed at the shipyard.

The yard continued under several owners throughout the Civil War and well into the 20th century.

Palmer's article also includes a chart listing all known vessels built at Ogdensburg, most of them by the St. Lawrence Marine Railway.

Also in the latest issue, Author James Carl explains how a community and technical college benefited from the generosity of five Clarkson women through a series of thoughtful donations of their land and fortune.

A hilltop estate consisting of woods, grand homes, barns and riding paths is now the site of Clarkson University with classrooms, major science research centers, hockey arena, parking lots and graduate student apartments.

The ladies also funded the construction of architect-designed Episcopal churches, such as Trinity Church in Potsdam, Zion in Colton and St. Philips in Norwood.

Also funded were the hospital, cemetery association, individual and other institutional needs.

Issues of the Quarterly can be purchased at the Silas Wright House in Canton or received by subscription as a benefit of membership, $30 for individuals and $25 for seniors and students. Info: 386-8133 or info@slcha.org.
