Ogdensburg man jailed after police discover meth lab, assault rifle at residence across from elementary school

OGDENSBURG – An Ogdensburg man was jailed Thursday after police discovered a meth lab at a residence directly across the street from an elementary school, according to the Ogdensburg Police Department’s Narcotics Enforcement Unit.

Police said they received a tip about a possible a meth lab at 510 Pine St. and obtained a search warrant ordered executed by Ogdensburg City Court Judge Gary Alford.

The Ogdensburg Police Department, along with the St. Lawrence County Drug Task Force, and members of the New York State Police Contaminated Crime Scene Emergency Response Team (CCSERT) executed the search warrant shortly after 4 p.m.

Once inside the residence investigators located multiple, dry “one-pot” meth labs, along with numerous chemical components, tools and equipment used in methamphetamine production. Police also found a quantity of packaged, methamphetamine product and various forms of drug paraphernalia.

Police also found several weapons including an assault rifle, including a 25 round clip containing ammunition, brass knuckles and a billy club.

John M. Best  was charged with third-degree unlawful manufacture of methamphetamine, felony, fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, felony, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, felony, two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and two counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

He was also charged with criminal possession of hypodermic instruments, criminal use of drug paraphernalia and unlawful possession of marijuana.

Best was held in Ogdensburg City lockup overnight and will be arraigned in Ogdensburg City Court Friday, Sept. 18.

The investigation remains ongoing, and further arrests are possible.

Police Department was also assisted at the scene by the Ogdensburg Fire Department.
