Ogdensburg man arrested for attempting to solicit sex from child

OGDENSBURG – An Ogdensburg man was arrested Saturday for attempting to solicit a child under age 16 for sex, according to the Ogdensburg Police Department Criminal Investigations Unit.

Kevin M. McCarthy Jr., 30, was charged with third-degree criminal solicitation, felony, police said.

Ogdensburg police investigators, along with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations, as well as, the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Unit, conducted a joint investigation on Saturday evening in Ogdensburg.

McCarthy allegedly had contact with and engaged in communication with a child purported to be under the age of sixteen and  attempted to meet the child at a specific location in Ogdensburg.

It was at that time, that McCarthy was taken into custody, investigators said.

McCarthy is being held in lockup at the Ogdensburg Police Department and will answer his charges in Ogdensburg City Court on Sunday.

Despite being charged with a violation of state law, federal charges may be pending, officers said.

The joint operation agencies were also assisted by the Village of Potsdam Police Department.
