Ogdensburg lawmakers to discuss increase in fees at arena, and covert equipment maintenance plan

OGDENSBURG – Ogdensburg City Council will consider several resolutions Monday including a fee increase at Lockwood Civic Center and the use of funds from a Homeland Security Grant for a for a covert equipment service plan.

Ogdensburg officials will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at City Hall to discuss an increase in fees for non-residents at the Lockwood Arena. The proposal calls for a $5 increase in its ice rental rates to $85 per hour for non-resident youths and to $95 for non-resident adults at the civic center.

Following a review of rates for recreation activities and facilities, Recreation Director Mathew Curatolo is recommending the increase. A survey of surrounding arenas found that Canton charges $93 per hour for ice time.

Potsdam charges $115 per hour, but offers $105 rate to minor hockey teams. Massena charges $105 per hour for adults and $95 to $100 for children.

“These rates are still quite a bit less from our rates of $80 for non-resident youth and $90 for nonresident adults. The commission recommended raising the rates by $5 each for youth and adult non-residents. The new rates would be $85 for youth non-resident groups and $95 for nonresident adults,” Curatolo said in a memorandum to the city manager.

The council is also expected to pass a resolution to spend $3,220 of Operation Stonedgarden Funds to purchase a one-time licensing fee to operate covert equipment that was purchased with money from the same grant.

Operation Stone Garden funding comes from the Department of Homeland Security and is aimed at improving communication and information sharing between law enforcement agencies at the local, state, county and federal level.

Other items for city council action include a resolution to allow $55,000 increase in an agreement between the city and John J. Doyle Builders for work at the waste water facility and an ordinance to all public presentations at the beginning and end of city council meetings.
