Ogdensburg hunter lost in the woods near Wolf Lake in Edwards rescued by rangers

EDWARDS – A 50-year-old hunter from Ogdensburg who got separated from his group asked for help getting out of the woods in Wolf Lake State Forest west of Edwards Sunday night.

At about 6:30 p.m. Environmental Conservation Officer Bret Canary received a call from a group of hunters in the wooded area to advise of the lost the Ogdensburg man, and requested help in their search.

Rangers Nathan Shea and William Benzel responded. Ranger Shea proceeded to the area to locate the lost hunter.

At 8:09 p.m., DEC’s Ray Brook Dispatch received a radio message from Shea that the subject had re-established contact with his hunting party.

The subject was escorted out of the woods by 8:30 p.m. in good health.

The hunter had been lost in a beaver swamp without cell service, but eventually found his way back to the trail.

New York State Department of (DEC) Forest Rangers respond to search and rescue incidents statewide. Working with other state agencies, local emergency response organizations, and volunteer search and rescue groups, Forest Rangers locate and extract lost, injured, or distressed people from the backcountry.

In 2017, DEC Forest Rangers conducted 346 search and rescue missions, extinguished 55 wildfires that burned a total of 191 acres, participated in 29 prescribed fires that burned and rejuvenated 564 acres, and worked on cases that resulted in nearly 3,000 tickets or arrests.
