Ogdensburg Free Academy’s top senior achievers announced

OGDENSBURG -- The academic leaders for the Class of 2013 at Ogdensburg Free Academy are John Morrison, valedictorian, and Mackenzie Comeau, salutatorian.

Morrison is the son of John and Martha Morrison of Ogdensburg. With a grade point average of 98.57, he is ranked first in his senior class of 116 students; a position he has maintained since the eighth grade.

John will graduate with an Advanced Regents Diploma with Honors later this month. John is also eligible to receive a New York State Merit Award for academic excellence; and was nominated for both the Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award through the University of Rochester as well as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Medal for outstanding academic achievement and school and community leadership.

His long-term involvement and leadership in our school’s various clubs and sports teams makes John easily recognizable among our staff, student and community population. John has represented Ogdensburg Free Academy on several sports teams, including golf; baseball and football. He has received such honors and awards as Academic All-Northern and a Sportsmanship Award. John has also been involved in several clubs throughout his high school career, including Student Council, National Honor Society and Key Club, where he served as vice president.

John has been a member of the National Honor Society since being inducted in his sophomore year; and has attended our Academic Banquet throughout his high school career. In order to attend this banquet, a student must maintain an 88.5 average.

John expresses an interest in the field of engineering. He has prepared himself academically in taking every advanced course our school offers, and excelled in each. John also took advantage of an engineering internship through National Grid during the summer of 2012. He will be attending Le Moyne College in the fall of 2013 and has chosen engineering as his intended major.

Ms. Comeau, daughter of Dr. Christopher and Mrs. Christine Comeau, has an academic average of 97.91. She has achieved high honor roll all four years of her high school career, is the treasurer of the National Honor Society, treasurer of the Class of 2013 and treasurer of Student Council.

In addition, Mackenzie is an active four-year member of the Key Club, and is also on this year’s Yearbook committee. Mackenzie has been a four-year member of the swim team, and in addition plays lacrosse and hockey where she has served as a team captain this past year.

She was also a member of the Section X All-Academic team for all three varsity sports and was awarded the Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winner for the 2012-13 hockey season. In addition, she has been a member of the Potsdam Ice Storm Hockey team since 9th grade.

Mackenzie will graduate with an Advanced Regents Diploma with Honors from Ogdensburg Free Academy. She was awarded the NYS Academic Excellence Scholarship and is enrolled in a dual enrollment program with SUNY Geneseo and The Dental School at the University of Buffalo.
