Ogdensburg Free Academy students vote for president of United States, local representatives in mock election

OGDENSBURG -- Students at Ogdensburg Free Academy recently participated in a mock election from Oct. 17 through Oct. 27.

The 465 students were asked to make selections according to the races that will appear on the Nov. 8 ballot in the City of Ogdensburg.

Republican candidate Donald Trump received over 44 percent of the votes to defeat Democrat Hillary Clinton, who received just under 33 percent. Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson received 11 percent and Jill Stein of the Green Party received six percent of the votes.

Democrat Charles Schumer received over 54 percent of the votes to easily defeat Republican challenger Wendy Long in the US Senate simulation.

Incumbent Republican Elise Stefanik received over 37 percent of the votes in the race for New York's 21st Congressional District. Democratic Mike Derrick received 27 percent of the votes while Matthew Funiciello of the Green Party received over seven percent. 28 percent of voters abstained.

Republican John Byrne (44 percent) defeated incumbent Democrat Addie Russell in the race for 116th District Assembly.

Finally, Republican candidate Derek R. VanHouse received 58 percent of the votes in the race for St. Lawrence County Treasurer and handily defeated Democrat Renee Cole and Independence candidate Robert Santamoor.

Materials for the Mock Election were sponsored by the Youth Leadership Initiative, a national civic education program based at the University of Virginia Center for Politics.

Students voted through the use of paper and online ballots.
