OGDENSBURG -- Ogdensburg Free Academy Board of Education has approved a plan that will allow the school to retain its special education director through the 2017-2018 school year.

Superintendent Timothy Vernsey said Debora Hannan was set to retire mid-school year in the 2017-2018. This was due to an early retirement incentive offered by the district that has an age limit attached to it.

Vernsey said the district agreed to extend the age limit by a few months to ensure Hannan would not leave the district mid-year.

“The last thing you want is to have your director of special education retire mid-year,” Vernsey said. “So we had to do a memorandum of understanding with the union stating we’d allow her to receive the incentive despite her age.”

In other news, the school board Monday approved a settlement reimbursement of up to $25,000 regarding a student with disabilities litigation.

Vernsey said he could not share the details of the litigation, but said it was to pay for attorney fees related to an impartial hearing that settled an incident that occurred last year.

Vernsey said the student involved no longer attends school in the district.
