Ogdensburg Free Academy names Peo, Snodgrass its 2017 class leaders

OGDENSBURG -- Ogdensburg Free Academy has named Hayley Snodgrass the valedictorian and Margaret Peo the salutatorian for the Class of 2017.

Both students were recognized by the Ogdensburg City School District Board of Education and administration at Monday's board meeting.

Snodgrass, the daughter of Paul and Lynette Snodgrass of Ogdensburg, has a grade point average of 97.29 and has ranked first in her class throughout her high school career.

She will graduate with an Advanced Regents diploma with honors and an annotation that denotes Mastery in Math and Science. Snodgrass has also achieved AP Scholar status by earning a score of three or higher on all of the advanced placement exams she has taken and has been an Academic All-Northern since 2014. She was also selected as a WWNY Academic All-Star and is expected to receive a NYS Academic Excellence Scholarship.

Musically, Snodgrass has participated in All County-Concert Band, Senior Band and Jazz Band for the past four years. She performed in the NYSSMA Solo Competition in ninth, 10th and 11th grade and the Area All-State Concert band in 11th and 12th grade.

A four-year member of the school's swim team, Snodgrass is a member of the NYSHPA Scholar Team and an Academic All-Northern.

She is also a member of the National Honor Society and Key Club and has participated in numerous volunteer activities, including tutoring younger high school students in need of academic assistance.

Snodgrass has been honored with the Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award, Le Moyne Heights Award and the Elmira Key Award.

She plans to attend a four-year institution to major in biochemistry and has been accepted to St. Lawrence University, Le Moyne College, SUNY Plattsburgh, SUNY Oswego and the University of Rochester.

Salutatorian Margaret Peo, the daughter of Michael and Sheila Peo of Ogdensburg, has a grade point average of 96.49 and has ranked second in her class throughout her high school career.

She will also graduate with an Advanced Regents diploma with honors and an annotation that denotes Mastery in Mathematics and Science. Peo is expected to receive a NYS Academic Excellence Scholarship.

She has participated in lacrosse, basketball, soccer and winter track and has been an Academic All-Northern for the past three years.

Peo is a member of the National Honor Society and has been involved in various activities, including Whiz Quiz, Student Council, and serving as a Site-Based student representative.

She has also performed with the OFA Marching Band and Jazz Band throughout high school.

Peo attended the Clarkson University enrichment program during her junior year and has been awarded with the Bausch and Lomb Scholarship, Evergreen STEM Scholarship and the Clarkson Leadership Award.

She plans to major in biology at a four-year institution and has been accepted to the University of Rochester, Le Moyne College, St. Lawrence University and Clarkson University.

Snodgrass and Peo were teammates on the first place team from Ogdensburg at the 2016 St. Lawrence University Pi Mu Episolon Interscholastic Mathematics Contest.

"Hayley and Maggie have both worked very hard throughout their years at OFA and we're very proud of both of them," said OFA High School Principal Cynthia Tuttle.

"Both girls have always demonstrated a great deal of responsibility, respect and discipline in all they do."

The valedictorian, salutatorian and senior class president will address their classmates, family and friends at the graduation ceremony to be held at noon on Saturday, June 24.
