OGDENSBURG -- Grant writing efforts by Ogdensburg Fire Chief Michael Farrell will cover the costs of new breathing equipment and a new emergency medical services unit totaling nearly $300,000.
Ogdensburg City Council agreed to purchase the vehicle from Swab Wagon Co. Inc. of Pennsylvania for $99,535. The costs will be covered in full from a State and Municipal Facilities Capital Program Grant secured by Farrell.
A second grant obtained by the chief will cover the purchase of 28 self-contained breathing apparatus units with 56 SCBA cylinders for a cost of $181,334. This grant is from the Department of Homeland Security.
Councilman Daniel Skamplerle questioned if the purchase of the breathing units could be delayed in order to extend the shelf life of the units.
Chief Farrell said the purchase could be delayed for one-year, but the units currently being used by the Ogdensburg Fire Department would be out of service life in November of this year.
Skamperle and fellow councilors commended Farrell for continuing to find outside funding to meet the needs of his department.
