OGDENSBURG – Ogdensburg has been named a ‘Tree City USA’ for the 24th consecutive year thanks to its dedication in preserving trees.
The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service. Ogdensburg joins more than 3,400 cities and towns that have been recognized as a Tree City USA community.
“Being recognized as a Tree City USA community highlights the city's commitment to urban forestry, community improvement and civic pride,” Curatolo said. “Trees are a vital asset to the city and managing them is very important. Trees help shade our homes and parks, help clean the air and help such things as energy costs and storm water run off.”
In order to be considered a Tree City USA, the city completed four requirements– establish a Tree Commission, a tree-care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program and observe Arbor Day.
Meanwhile the Ogdensburg Tree Commission is seeking applicants for the Tree Commission Board. There are currently two vacancies available on the seven-member volunteer board.
The tree commission routinely helps with grants, policies and ordinances as well as education involving city trees. One of the tree commission’s responsibility is planning an Arbor Day celebration to promote.
